ISLAMABAD – On Thursday, Dr. Reza
Amiri Moghadam, the Iranian ambassador to Pakistan, stated that there are
significant grounds for optimism that the relevant free trade agreement (FTA)
will be completed during the forthcoming visit of Iranian leader Ebrahim Raisi
to Pakistan, which is likely to increase mutual trade.
The Iranian representative to the Islamabad Office of Trade and Industry, Mr.
Ahsan Zafar Bakhtawri, the President of the Islamic Conference of Pakistan,
said during the visit that there will be some relevant financial and economic
transactions between the two countries following the impending visit of the
Iranian president to Pakistan. These will also strengthen the common monetary
and exchange relations and promote reciprocal business between the two
countries
According
to Dr. Reza Amiri Moghadam, there is currently $2.5 billion in bilateral trade
between Pakistan and Iran, up 11% in the last 11 months.
The minister stated that there are significant areas of strength for increasing
the shared exchange between Pakistan and Iran to reach $5 billion in the next
few years, following the FTA and the respective arrangements between the two
legislatures for the advancement of common exchange.
In the interest of the Iranian government, he claimed, the Pakistan-Iran gas
pipeline is a fantastic resource for Pakistani citizens and will benefit both
the country's traditional and contemporary areas.
Dr. Moghadam stated that Iran plays a major role in resolving Pakistan's energy
problems, which is why Iran completed the $1 billion Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline
project in 2009 to address Pakistan's energy needs. It might even be complete,
but Pakistan is still holding out for it to be completed.
Iran is currently trading oil and gas with Turkey, Turkmenistan, Iran, and
Azerbaijan, according to the Iranian Embassador, and Pakistan can also adopt
the strategy adopted with these countries.
Dr. Reza Amiri stated that although there are financial channels between Iran
and Turkey, Bahrain, Iraq, Pakistan, and Iran, the direct financial
relationship between Iran and Pakistan is a significant problem.
According
to him, Pakistan and Iran must build significant regions of strength in order
to have oceanic and ocean connections, which would strengthen their financial
ties and link Pakistan to international and territorial trade.
The Envoy emphasized the proximity of the sea ports between the two countries,
especially those between Karachi and Gwadar, as well as those between Chabahar
and Bandar Abbas. He also suggested that Gwadar and Chabahar be designated as
sister ports.
He stated that Pakistan and Iran will need to make investments in order to
interface with regional and global trade through these ports, since this is a
time of financial and exchange ties.
The Envoy stated that the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Pakistan-China
Exchange Passage are additional significant areas of strength for the need for
financial and exchange cooperation between Iran and Pakistan, which both
countries must work toward.
According to him, the world is currently connected to one another through
various financial and exchange corridors, and Pakistan and Iran may carve out a
place for themselves in the global exchange market by connecting with the
East-West and North-South exchange corridors.
According to Dr. Reza Amiri, this means that the two countries might be linked
to both commercial sectors in Europe as well as territorial interchange,
especially with Focal Asia.
He claimed that by engaging in joint commerce, Pakistan and Iran could meet 70%
of each other's needs. In a similar vein, Pakistan could contribute
significantly to Iran's halal meat imports.
The Iranian delegate stated that Iran is streamlining the visa application
process while providing Pakistani finance managers with electronic permits.
He added that further efforts should be made to advance the economic ties
between the business communities in Pakistan and Iran, specifically the Offices
of Trade and Industry in Tehran and Islamabad, should be made.
In his remarks, President of the ICCI Ahsan Zafar Bakhatwri stated that the
amount of trade between Pakistan and Iran exceeds $2.5 billion annually.
Pakistan supplies its neighbor with rice and other goods, and people in
Balochistan's border region save money by buying Iranian goods and food from
traders on the other side of the border.
He stated that Pakistan and Iran want to increase annual trade volume to $5
billion between the two countries as part of a five-year exchange collaboration
plan for 2023–2028.
According to Ahsan Zafar, the two countries are also members of many regional
and global organizations, such as the Association of Islamic Collaboration
(OIC) and the Financial Participation Association (ECO). Iran is working ever
more closely with the Shanghai Participation Association (SCO) as it nears full
membership
Ahsan stated that while the problem of excessive taxes on the Iranian side and the lack of reliable installment mechanisms should be resolved, framework improvements are important to work with wider deal exchange.
While attending to the social event organized by the ICCI, Khalid Iqbal Malik, the executive organizer of the organization, and Zafar Bakhtawri, the secretary general, also highlighted the many aspects of Pakistan-Iran ties.
